2013 Kia Sorento: What to Expect and Consider

Considering a 2013 Kia Sorento?

Kia has been making some serious strides in the automotive industry as of late. In 2012 Kia was
ranked number one for reliability by J.D. Power and Associates, and they have continued their
streak this year with a win at the 2013 North American Car of the Year Awards for their
redesigned Kia Sorento SUV.

The 2013 Kia Sorento is one of several used Kia models in our inventory, and we’ve written up an in-depth on what you
can expect from this classic model, as well as considerations that should be made before
purchasing!

Is the Kia Sorento a Good Car?

Space

If you want a comfortable cabin, then the Kia Sorento is the right choice. Besides being good-
looking and well-constructed, it has user-friendly features, and front seats. An option to include
third row seats is also available. Although it does have a comfortable third row, the SUV’s cargo
space isn’t as large as rivals. If you travel constantly with a full complement of passengers and
luggage, you should consider the V6 engine.

The 2013 Kia Sorento can hold 9.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third row, 37 cubic feet
behind the second row and 72.5 cubic feet with both rear rows stowed.

Features

What it lacked in cargo space was definitely made up in its reinvention. After dumping the truck-
based formula that it had relied on since it made its debut, it switched over to Kia’s midsize
Optima platform. Even in base form, it remains a value-packed vehicle, with many options and
configurations available-engines, transmissions, traction control systems, interiors-to appeal to
nearly any buyer. Beautifully detailed sheet metal encloses the entire package without playing
into outdated SUV trends.

KIA offers three different trim levels for the Sorento. These are LX, EX, and SX. The LX trim
level of the Sorento comes standard with power windows, locks, and mirrors, air conditioning,
cruise control, an AM/FM/CD player with satellite radio and steering-wheel controls, a USB
port, Bluetooth, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The Sorento still has a range of pricing in
the low-$20,000s, but it’s no longer as cheap as when the 2011 model year was new.

On this trim level, the third-row seat is optional, and when it’s ordered, it comes with the V-6
engine. You may also opt for a heated steering wheel or a leather wrapped steering wheel for
added added comfort.

As an EX, the Sorento is equipped with push button start, automatic headlights and fog lights, a
power driver seat and rear parking sensors. On the EX V-6 and the third-row seat, you’ll find an
air conditioner in the rear. Meanwhile, the Sorento SX comes with its own bodykit and sporty
wheels; it also comes with a standard navigation system that is voice-operated, as well as heated
seats, a ventilated steering wheel, and Infinity speakers.

2013 Kia Sorento Has Booming Sound System, “Magical” Panoramic Sunroof. This panoramic
sunroof is idea for buyers who want to experience the outdoors and feel the fresh air during a
cross- country drive.

Engineering

Engineering-wise, the new bodyshell is lighter than its predecessor, resulting in minor
improvements in fuel economy in automobiles and CO2 emissions across the range, but power
and torque remain unchanged. With hundreds of hours of car suspension tuning by Kia’s in-house
engineers, the SUV has genuinely acquired a local flavor.

Like any standard SUV, the 2013 Kia Sorento also comes with an check engine light. The engine
light tells you if your car may need some maintenance.

Performance

Overall, though, it compares favorably with its real competitors in terms of ride and handling
characteristics. In addition, an 18 percent increase in torsional rigidity has made bumps easier to
hear but not feel. Despite its all-wheel drive capability, the front-wheel drive Kia Sorento can be
a bit challenging to handle on dirt and loose surface roads.

How Much Oil Does a 2013 Kia Sorento Take

Amount of Oil

Based on a vehicle’s type, engine size, and oil type, how much oil to use varies widely. A four
cylinder passenger car uses less oil, and typically uses conventional oil, since it does not have the
power of an eight cylinder engine which requires full synthetic oil. Generally, engines need
between five and eight quarts of oil. If your engine has four cylinders, you will need around five
quarts of motor oil and if it has six cylinders, you will need around six quarts of oil.

Oil For 2013 Kia Sorento

Car manufacturers recommend using either SAE 5W-20 or 5W-30 in the 2013 Kia Sorento. 2.4L
oil tanks hold 4.9 quarts, 3.5L tanks hold 5.5 quarts. A properly topped-up engine performs
better. Regular maintenance of this type also prolongs the life of your vehicle. At a minimum,
you should get your oil changed every 4000 – 5000 miles. Maintaining the engine in good
condition will keep it running well.

Does the 2013 Kia Sorento Have Third Row Seating?

It comes standard with seating for five in two rows, but this can be expanded to seven in some
trim levels by adding an optional third row. Its high position offers good visibility, and the front
seats are comfortable. A tester writes that the third row option is impressively spacious, but it
should be reserved for children only. Second-row space, however, disappoints them. There is not
enough room for three people to sit comfortably in the second row, according to reviewers.

Apart from the third row in the Toyota RAV4, the Kia Sorento is the only vehicle in its class
equipped with a third-row seat. Even though the Kia Sorento’s seat will not accommodate taller
passengers than five feet, and the seat cushion sits close to the floor to yield the headroom there
is, the seven-seater is a good alternative to a minivan in terms of ease and flexibility.

There is also a decently low load floor in the cargo area to complement the third-row seat’s
folding flatness, and the second-row seats fold forward to open up 72.5 cubic feet of hauling
space. In addition to the cramped cargo space, the seatback itself sits very close to the rear hatch
glass when the third row is in place

Is a 2013 Kia Sorento All Wheel Drive?

Horsepower

Among the standard features of the 2013 Kia Sorento LX is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that
produces 175 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque. There is a six-speed automatic
transmission, front wheel drive, and all-wheel drive as options. The EPA estimates 22 mpg
city/31 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined with front wheel drive, and 20/26/22 with all-wheel
drive.

Load

This new model is a direct-injected four-cylinder with excellent fuel economy, good acceleration,
and midrange power. Those who order all-wheel drive and need the seven-seat model and plan to
load up their crossover on a regular basis will be best served by a V-6, while commuters who use
their Kia Sorento lightly can benefit from the direct-injected four-cylinder engine.

Transmission

In addition to its frugal price tag and lack of power, the base four-cylinder offers little in the way
of performance or fuel economy. With 175 horsepower, it comes with either an automatic or six-
speed manual transmission and can be driven front wheel drive or all wheel drive.
Although it’s a four-cylinder engine, it’s not that much better than the improved direct injection
four-cylinder on the Kia Sorento LX and EX.

Noise

Featuring 191 horsepower and up to 30 mpg on the EPA highway cycle, this engine produces a
little more noise, but it also gives the Kia Sorento a little more power. With it, the KIA Sorento
feels a bit more responsive and is capable of a 0-60 mph time of less than 9 seconds.

Is the 2013 Kia Sorento a Safe Car?

Test Results

According to the results of test agencies, the 2013 Kia Sorento provides families with above-
average safety. Though there aren’t many advanced highway safety features, it still scores well
here for basics and a few options.
With a Top Safety Pick rating, the Kia Sorento receives a “good” rating for all IIHS crash tests,
including a new roof-crush rating. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA), the Kia Sorento receives a four-star overall rating, one star for frontal
impact and one star for rollover and one star for side impact protection.

Safety Features

Dual front, side, and curtain airbags; anti-lock braking system; traction and electronic stability
control; and active head restraints are some of the highway safety features that come standard on
every 2013 Kia Sorento.

Although the Kia Sorento’s rear roof pillars are substantial, visibility is still good. In high-end
versions, rearview cameras come packaged with expensive navigation systems as well as rear
parking sensors. All models come with Bluetooth, however.

Conclusion

The 2013 Kia Sorento is a great car for anyone looking for ample space packed in a mid-sized
car. It has an average cargo capacity and good front row and third row seats.
